South Glengarry Receives Seniors Community Grant
MoreGrant to fund 55+ Certified Senior Fitness Instructor Training Project
Lancaster, Ontario, May 4, 2018 – The Township of South Glengarry and MPP Jim McDonell excitedly announced that the Township of South Glengarry has been awarded a grant of $8,000 through the Ministry of Senior Affairs’ Seniors Community Grant Program at a press conference held this morning at the Martintown Community Centre.
The funds have been awarded for a 55+ Certified Senior Fitness Instructor Volunteer Training Project. A volunteer recruitment and training program will be developed, allowing adults ages 55 and older to become certified senior fitness instructors to volunteer their time and lead balance for life programs to older adults in community centers. The benefits focus on increasing healthy active living, providing education on fall prevention and access to senior-related resources.
The project ties in with the Age-Friendly Community Action Plan developed by the Township in 2016. The plan contains recommendations on improving South Glengarry’s recreation services for adults 55 years of age and older.
“The Township of South Glengarry is thrilled to receive this funding, which will assist us as we continue to implement our Age-Friendly Community Plan,” stated General Manager of Community Services Joanne Haley, “We anticipate that the classes will benefit at least 100 seniors in our community, helping to increase both their physical and mental well-being.”
“It’s great that the Province has recognized the needs of our Senior community,” stated Mayor Ian McLeod, “On behalf of Council, thank you for supporting the Township of South Glengarry.”
MPP Jim McDonell added, “Our seniors built the Ontario we know today and it is up to us to treat them with the respect they deserve by enhancing their quality of life. This initiative from the Township of South Glengarry will accomplish this by offering opportunities for seniors to stay active, independent and maintain a healthy lifestyle”
